Unlike traditional fiat currencies, Bitcoin is completely decentralized and operates without a central bank or single administrator. The network is secured by miners who contribute computational power to solve complex cryptographic puzzles—a process known as Proof of Work (PoW). This consensus mechanism not only secures the network against fraudulent transactions but also regulates the creation of new bitcoins.
Every transaction is verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. By maintaining this transparent ledger, Bitcoin effectively solves the "double-spending" problem inherent to digital cash, ensuring a trustless and immutable financial system.

Published in 2008 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, the Bitcoin whitepaper introduces a purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash. It allows online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution, effectively removing the need for trusted third parties.
The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing the proof-of-work. Bitcoin utilizes the SHA-256 algorithm and Merkle trees to efficiently summarize all transactions in a block.
Bitcoin has a strictly capped supply of 21 million coins. To introduce new coins into the network and incentivize miners, Bitcoin utilizes a halving mechanism where the block reward is cut in half approximately every four years (every 210,000 blocks).
Unlike traditional software products, Bitcoin's roadmap is not dictated by a central team. Upgrades happen through community consensus and Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs). Major milestones include the introduction of Segregated Witness (SegWit) to fix transaction malleability, and Taproot to enhance privacy and smart contract capabilities. Looking ahead, scaling relies heavily on Layer-2 solutions like the Lightning Network.
